History of the Cappella
The cappella was founded in 1989 during transition period when graduator of the Kazan’ conservatoire a conductor S.Lishenko arrived in Mogilev. It took two months to select members among enthusiastic singers. For the first time in Mogilev sacred music, Belorussian chants and rear classical choral works were heard. The cappella includes also a music lecturer to introduce performed compositions to the audience.
Four years later an orchestra has been established in order to perform vocals and symphonies. During this time S.Lishenko takes a post graduate course in Kazan’conservatoire
to become an opera and symphony conductor. At the same time professional skill of the cappella improved and communication was established with German Amateur orchestra from Teltov. In 1990s exchange visits of musicians have been arranged between Mogilev and Germany. Direct acquaintances with European musical traditions and joint performances of Bach by the Mogilev cappella and German musicians with an invitation of guest soloists from Berlin opera have been arranged. All this and visits to such places as Eisenah, Leipzigh and Berlin were connected with the work of great composers helped the cappella to learn the specifics of western classics. Performance of ancient and modern choral works and music of Buelorussian authors has enriched the repertoire.
In 1998 choir and orchestra started to work on professional basis and in 2002 acquired legal status under the name of “Mogilev town cappella”. Since that time they have been preparing more then 20 new programs and gave 120 concerts every year. The concerts were performed in drama theatre, art museum, schools, colleges and plants. Altogether they made more then a 1000 public performances in Mogilev region and always at full strength. The majority of the members of the choir and orchestra is relatively young and the average age is 30. Each concert consists of three parts: choral, orchestral and vocal-symphony. “Mogilev town cappella” prepares various programs to mark memorable dates in the history of music.
They actively participate in town actions and in the International festival of sacred music “All Mighty God” and are initiators of a festival “Mogilev choral gathering” dedicated to memory of Archbishop George Kannisky. Festivals in honour of Bach, Mozart and on the occasion of Christmas are arranged. The group takes part in arts exhibitions and international plain airs.
The cappella is able to perform all musical genres from miniatures to large works such as instrumental and choral concerts, liturgical cycles, masses and oratories.
